I got interviewed about 27 years of mandolin
Sep 09, 2026I got interviewed for Folkstrings.com about how I found the mandolin, what took me longest to actually understand, and what I tell students who feel stuck. Daniel Johnstone put it together, and it came out today.
A couple of lines from it that I still think about, even having written them:
"I had no idea what I was getting into. But I'm still here 27 years later, and mandolin playing is the biggest passion in my life."
"Your musicality needs interaction with other humans to fully thrive."
We also get into pick slanting, why most teachers never explain it clearly, and the one thing I see beginner and intermediate players skip that would speed up everything else.
